The dynamics of chironomid assemblages and vegetation during the Late Quaternary at Laguna Facil, Chonos Archipelago, southern Chile

چکیده
We compare high-resolution pollen and chironomid records from the last 15,000 yr in Laguna Facil, southern Chile. Major vegetation and chironomid changes are recorded between ca 14,900 and 14,700 cal. yr BP. During the Lateglacial, changes in the chironomid stratigraphy lag behind changes in the pollen stratigraphy suggesting that the chironomids are responding to changes in the tree canopy or in soil chemistry brought about by vegetational development. At about 7200 cal. yr BP there is a change in the chironomid stratigraphy in advance of changes in the vegetation. This suggests that the response is to regional climatic change. The relatively close correlation of the chironomid and pollen stratigraphies with changes in charcoal concentrations also implicates the importance of fire and/or vulcanism in influencing the dynamics of forest and limnological systems. There is no clear evidence of cooling during the Younger Dryas chronozone in Laguna Facil. r 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Postglacial formation and dynamics of North Patagonian Rainforest in the Chonos Archipelago, Southern Chile
Pollen analysis of continuous sediment cores from two lakes in the northern Chonos Archipelago (44 S) in southern Chile shows a complete postglacial record of vegetation change. The fossil records indicate that deglaciation was complete in the northern Chonos by at least 13,600 C yr BP. Ericaceous heath and grassland persisted for more than 600 years after deglaciation under the influence of dr...
متن کاملMiddle-Late Cambrian acritarchs from the Zardkuh area in the High Zagros Mountains, southern Iran: Stratigraphic and paleogeographic implications
The excellent preservation of the acritarchs, their great abundance, diversity and good stratigraphic control permit establishment of a detailed Middle and Late Cambrian acritarch biozonation. A total of 56 palynomorph species form the basis of 10 local acritarch assemblage zones. Assemblage zones I-II occur in the lower and middle parts of the Member C of the Mila Formation and suggest Early-m...
متن کاملLate Quaternary paleoclimate of western Alaska inferred from fossil chironomids and its relation to vegetation histories
Fossil Chironomidae assemblages (with a few Chaoboridae and Ceratopogonidae) from Zagoskin and Burial Lakes in western Alaska provide quantitative reconstructions of mean July air temperatures for periods of the late-middle Wisconsin (w39,000–34,000 cal yr B.P.) to the present. Inferred temperatures are compared with previously analyzed pollen data from each site summarized here by indirect ord...
متن کاملSedimentology, mineralogy and sedimentary geochemistry of the Late Quaternary sedimentary sequence of Gavkhoni Playa by looking at the paleoclimate
The sediments of the Playa Lake are sensitive indicators of local climates that any change in climate, hydrology, and sedimentary environment will cause changes in the physical and chemical properties of the sediments. These sediments create a valuable and important archive with high resolution to examine these changes in the past. One method of studying climate change during quaternary and oft...
متن کاملCrab biodiversity under different management schemes of mangrove ecosystems
Reforestation is one of the Philippines’ government efforts to restore and rehabilitate degraded mangrove ecosystems. Although there is recovery of the ecosystem in terms of vegetation, the recovery of closely-linked faunal species in terms of community structure is still understudied. This research investigates the community structure of mangrove crabs under two different management schemes: p...
